DESIGN
Urban Design

At LSA, community planning and revitalization converge to provide the methodology and skills required for successful urban design. LSA provides efficient and responsive urban design support for private development projects, Public Specific plans, and stand-alone efforts.

When designing for public and urban spaces, LSA focuses on identifying an appropriate plan and then guiding the process of change in the physical environment. LSA’s award-winning work recognizes and celebrates the excitement and diversity of a city by integrating complex social, physical, and economic systems. LSA's design solutions focus on the vitality of mixed-use and pedestrian movement in a city’s public realm and on the visual character of private development.

Downtown and corridor design plans developed by LSA set a framework for the preservation and enhancement of existing buildings and urban areas. LSA prepares detailed streetscape plans to improve circulation of pedestrians, bicycles, and automobiles; creates street tree and median planting plans; selects street furniture consistent with community character; and sets architectural guidelines that are creative and compatible with existing building styles.

SERVICES INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING:

  • Downtown revitalization plans
  • Design guidelines and standards
  • Transit-oriented development
  • Bicycle and pedestrian plans
  • Public transportation programs

REPRESENTATIVE PROJECTS:
Norco Sixth Street Revitalization Specific Plan

Norco Sixth Street Revitalization Specific Plan
City of Norco
Norco, California

Challenges faced by the City of Norco to revitalize east Sixth Street were both unique to the circumstances of the corridor and the City, and generic to the problem of economic and physical revitalization. Existing uses along Sixth Street reflect the City's small town and equestrian character, while the linear nature of Sixth Street works against the creation of a small downtown. The Sixth Street Revitalization Specific Plan guides and stimulates quality development that is consistent with Norco's equestrian lifestyle.

The following elements were used to create the Sixth Street Revitalization Specific Plan:

  • Photographic Essay
  • Opportunities and Constraints Matrix
  • Economic Development Strategy
  • Community Workshops and Merchant Survey
  • Restructuring of Zoning
  • Site and Architectural Standards and Guidelines
  • Implementation and Administration

LSA received an Outstanding Planning/Comprehensive Planning Association in 2000 for this innovative planning approach.

Kansas City Pedestrian Plan

Kansas City Pedestrian Plan
City of Kansas City
Kansas City, Missouri

Pedestrian planning for large cities requires analysis and recommendations at multiple scales. Accordingly, the Kansas City Pedestrian Plan includes the development of methodologies and evaluation of a city-wide pedestrian demand, development of a mobility index map for the City, and establishment of a consistent pedestrian level of service methodology. On a local level, LSA prepared a self-assessment manual to encourage neighborhood residents to join in data collection and improvement prioritization efforts. The final product includes pedestrian standards, procedures for pedestrian evaluations, and both microlevel and macrolevel pedestrian mobility goals with specific strategies and actions to prioritize and implement the vision.

Laramie Downtown Revitalization and Development Plan

Laramie Downtown Revitalization and Development Plan
City of Laramie Downtown Development Authority
Laramie, Wyoming

Downtown Laramie has a strong local and independent business presence and benefits from both its nationally recognized historic character and its close proximity to the University of Wyoming. To build on these strengths, LSA was retained to develop a unified vision for the downtown, increase investment in the downtown, and prepare an implementation plan for the next five years. Major elements of the work effort include a market profile; streetscape enhancement concepts; traffic, circulation, and parking analysis and recommendations; and an implementation plan. Specific challenges include the intersection of two State highways in the heart of downtown, balancing the needs of pedestrians and automobile users, and providing connections to the University of Wyoming.
