California Speedway

LSA conducted air quality and noise impact evaluations for the one-quarter mile drag strip within the California Speedway facility in the City of Fontana, California. Noise monitoring was done during a test race at the site and in adjacent residential areas. Noise levels measured were used to evaluate potential noise impacts associated with the street-legal drag race. Some mitigation measures were identified to reduce the noise impacts to less than significant.

The California Speedway is located in the southwest portion of San Bernardino County, south of the foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains. The nearly 550 acre site is centrally located approximately 40 miles east of downtown Los Angeles, near the intersection of Interstate 10 (the San Bernardino Freeway) and Interstate 15 (the Ontario Freeway). The purpose of the California Speedway is to create a major sports facility on a previously underutilized site, thereby enhancing San Bernardino County's emerging entertainment and hospitality economy and increasing local employment opportunities. The California Speedway also serves to return "major league" auto racing to Southern California. Following its opening in the spring of 1997, the California Speedway became one of the premier racing facilities in the country. The two-mile, tri-oval track accommodates over 105,000 spectators, with 33,000 parking spaces and nearly 1,500 RV spaces available. The facility has been designed so that the entire track is visible from all grandstand seats. Both CART IndyCar and NASCAR, sponsor of the Winston Cup Series, committed to races within the first year of Speedway operations.
