Palmdale Historic American Buildings Survey
Client: City of Palmdale
Location: Palmdale, California

Palmdale HABS

Under contract to the City of Palmdale, LSA completed Historic American Buildings Survey level III (HABS III) archival and photographic documentation for 954 and 962 East Avenue Q-11 in the City of Palmdale, Los Angeles County, California. As part of the City of Palmdale’s Courson Connection project, these single-family residences were surveyed by LSA in 2002. They were found eligible for listing in the California Register of Historical Resources for their association with the early residential development of Palmdale, 1896–1940, and as good later examples of the Craftsman style of the 1920s and 1930s.

The HABS III documentation served as mitigation for the demolition of the homes under the CEQA. It included 4x5 inch black and white photographs and 35mm color photographs of all exterior elevations, interior views, character-defining features and context views, taken by an LSA architectural photographer.

The 4x5 photographs were contact-printed on fiber-based paper in accordance with the requirements of the National Park Service HABS program and the Library of Congress. LSA also prepared written data that included an architectural description, historic context, and a bibliography of available books, primary resources, and archival institutions. The project was completed in less than six weeks.
