Mammoth Ski Resort Redevelopment Traffic Analysis

As part of the traffic analysis for a ski resort redevelopment project in Mammoth, California, LSA prepared a series of 3D traffic micro-simulations to visualize and examine the operation of an intersection, proposed modern roundabout, on-street parking, and pedestrian crossings. The proposed redevelopment project, undertaken by Mammoth Crossings, includes two major mid-block pedestrian crossings and a new modern roundabout. Using VISSIM, a 3D micro simulation model, LSA presented the future traffic conditions in a way that was easy to comprehend and examine. The simulations demonstrated the safe and efficient operation of the proposed roundabout itself, the intersection of California State Highway 203 and Lake Mary Road, and the interaction between pedestrians and through-traffic at the mid-block crossings. While considerable analysis had been prepared to describe the operating conditions with the proposed improvements, the 3D simulations proved to be a particularly effective presentation tool for conveying both the operations and the aesthetics of the proposed improvements.
