Japantown Corporation Yard Redevelopment Project Environmental Impact Report
Client: City of San Jose
Location: San Jose, California

Japantown Redevelopment

The proposed project would redevelop 6.35 acres consisting of the City’s former Japantown Corporation Yard and associated surface parking lot. A total of 600 market-rate condominium units are proposed, along with 75 units of affordable senior housing, ground floor retail uses, and up to 20,000 square feet of community amenity space. The project site is located in the northern part of the City, in an area that was developed in the early 20th century as a distinct Japanese business district, consisting primarily of grocery and clothing stores and boarding houses. In addition to historic structures adjacent to the project site, the site has a high likelihood of containing significant archaeological resources associated with historic-era Japanese and Chinese settlements. Today’s Japantown is a diverse neighborhood; however, it continues to be the cultural center for the Japanese-American community and numerous cultural, religious, and arts organizations. One of the objectives of the proposed project is to create a vibrant mix of housing, retail, and community amenities that will contribute to and complement the livability of the area. LSA is preparing the Environmental Impact Report for the proposed project.
