East Bay Parks Wildfire Hazard Reduction and Resource Management Plan and
Wildland/urban interface wildfires are a fact of life for the East Bay Hills, with the 1991 Oakland/Berkeley fire being only one during a 75-year history of fire disasters. LSA was selected by East Bay Regional Park District to prepare an updated and comprehensive Wildfire Hazard Reduction and Resource Management Plan based on sound fire-science concepts, and an Environmental Impact Report/Environmental Assessment document that evaluates the plan. This project focuses on 13 East Bay hills parks ranging from Sobrante Ridge in El Sobrante to Lake Chabot in Castro Valley and two shoreline parks. The Plan will specifically address priority vegetation management areas along the wildland/urban interface. LSA will recommend vegetation management practices to reduce the risk of wildfire while protecting and managing habitat; identify best management practices; and create a post-treatment monitoring program. The Alameda whipsnake and pallid manzanita are two special status species among the 23 animal and 50 plant species that will be taken into consideration during preparation of the Plan and Environmental Impact Report/Environmental Assessment. Carol Rice, noted fire specialist, joins LSA to conduct the wildfire hazard assessment; Amphion is leading the public involvement process.
