Colorado National Hydrography Dataset Stewardship Recommendation
Client: Colorado Department of Natural Resources, Division of Water Resources
Location: Colorado

Colorado National Hydrography Dataset Stewardship Recommendation

The National Hydrography Dataset (NHD) contains digital data about the country’s water features. Created by the U.S.G.S., it often lacks the detail and accuracy that local entities need. These entities must often edit these data to meet the mandates of their agencies. Rather than having groups independently edit and resubmit these data, the U.S.G.S. has set up stewards to manage NHD edits in each state. LSA has been selected to conduct a pilot to determine the processes and costs associated with stewardship for Colorado.  Stakeholders were interviewed within the state and across the country to determine the level of effort that is, or could be, expended to improve the dataset.  LSA also extensively edited the NHD in Colorado to get first-hand experience on the edit process.  The U.S.G.S. will use LSA’s final report to help other states set up their NHD stewardship.
