LSA created a mitigation monitoring program for The Irvine Company in order to streamline overall management of mitigation measures. GIS was used to provide an accurate basemap showing the various environmental impacts for each development project within the area. Mitigation monitoring updates were managed by Irvine Company staff using an Excel spreadsheet. The challenge was to link the Excel spreadsheet to the GIS basedata so that the managers at the Irvine Company could effectively change the behavior of the GIS. VBA was used to interface ArcMap to Excel, allowing changes in Excel to also update the GIS information. As the individual projects proceeded, the project managers updated the mitigation requirements of their project through Excel. In turn, this information was used to update the overall mitigation monitoring program for all of the area, giving a clearer picture of the status of each project.
