Located in the coastal mountains of San Mateo County, Pilarcitos Quarry has been continually active since the 1950s. The quarry is located on 593 acres, providing fill material, sand, drain rock, and aggregate to the region. The property lies in a long valley containing a stream and numerous endangered species. Due to the numerous environmental issues at the site, LSA managed a team of specialized consultants to develop unique and environmentally-sensitive methods to expand mining areas while satisfying the requirements of the various local, state, and federal permitting agencies with jurisdiction over the project. For example, subsurface pits have been developed into water storage features to collect stormwater runoff and creek overflow that will supplement flows in Pilarcitos Creek during dry seasons. This feature will enhance habitat quality within the watershed between the quarry and the Pacific Ocean. The project also includes dedication of a perpetual 210-acre conservation easement of undisturbed land.
In addition, LSA provided annual mine inspections and reporting, Financial Assurance Cost Estimates, Hazardous Materials Business Plans, and annual stormwater reports.
