Canal Quarry

Photo of the Canal Quarry

Mining operations had ceased when the State Mining and Geology Board (SMGB) cited Canal Quarry for numerous violations and required that the site be suitably reclaimed to address the unstable and eroded slope and failed revegetation efforts. Prior to reclamation, the quarry was a complex site with numerous geotechnical, drainage, archeological, and revegetation issues. LSA led a team of technical consultants in preparing a Reclamation Plan to address the issues identified by the SMGB, including stabilizing slopes, addressing erosion problems, and implementing a successful revegetation program. For this work, the team received the Excellence in Reclamation Award from the Department of Conservation, Office of Mine Reclamation. LSA also provided technical oversight of the environmental review document. Today, Canal Quarry boasts a grassy hillside of lush native vegetation flourishing on the formerly oversteepened, severely eroded quarry slopes. Some of the erosion-control techniques employed included installation of a geo-grid reinforced fill buttress covered with erosion control blankets, core wattles, hydroseeding, woody plants, and v-ditches lined with turf reinforcing materials. After much effort, Canal Quarry has become the successful result of strategic reclamation practices at work.
